How to Study the Bible pt. 3- Character Study

We are continuing our series on How to Study the Bible. Lesson 1 was an introduction to in-depth study. Lesson 2 covered Devotional study. Lesson 3 we will cover Character Bible study. This is my favorite type of in depth Bible study. I hope you are enjoying these posts on how to better study the Bible.

Character Studies

FOCUS VERSE Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope

One of the most enjoyable ways to study the Bible is through the study of it’s characters. A major goal of Christian living is to develop godly character. What better way to gain better character than to study the lives of the people of the Bible?

How to Study the Bible pt. 2- Devotional Study

Devotional Study

FOCUS VERSE: John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Devotional Bible study is the most basic form of study. This is where we read through certain passages of Scripture, meditate on those scriptures and learn to apply those same scriptures.

Apply the Bible

The scriptures are what we use to learn more about God. All scripture is profitable for our lives (2 Timothy 3:16). If we understand that all of the Bible is the inspired Word of God, then it’s important we apply the words that are written to our lives.

How to Study the Bible pt. 1

Over the last three weeks I have been teaching the students in my Bible class how to study the Bible. Many avoid Bible study because they don’t know where, or how to begin. I want to share with you for the next several days, or weeks the lessons that I’ve taught. I have taken some principles from Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods, Watchman Nee’s How to Study the Bible and of course my own findings. I hope that the Holy Spirit would ignite a fire within us for more Bible study.

I wasn’t physically born in a church, but it sure seems like I spent the majority of my adolescence underneath the pew of the United Pentecostal Church of Highland Village in Bloomington. I can’t remember a time from my childhood that I didn’t spend it around the church. From Sunday school to Vacation Bible School to the choir loft and eventually to my first love the drums, I was born into this movement. All of my best friends to this day are the ones I grew up with in the church.

Use the Thoughts of Other Men’s Brains

The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains, proves that he has no brains of his own.- C.H. Spurgeon

I love this quote. It’s stashed away in the corridors of my mind. It speaks volumes of Spurgeon who has been graciously called the “prince of preachers.” If you go through a preacher’s library more times than not you will find some type of book written by Charles Spurgeon. I reference him during my studies and preparation almost weekly. His devotions and sermons have sparked lots of thoughts for sermons I’ve preached.
