Spring is upon us and we are close to being four months into 2013. So how are your new year resolutions holding up? Are your personal goals being accomplished? Have you established new habits? Well if you are anything like the rest of humans then you are probably struggling to attain the lofty goals and resolutions that you set.

Getting disciplined and creating new habits is tough work. And somehow we make it tougher on ourselves than we actually realize. These steps that I want to present to you may not be revolutionary or even all that spiritual. But I have found them to be rather helpful to attain self discipline.

Bible Reading Plans for 2013

As the credits begin to scroll across the screen and thus ending 2012 we embark on our new journey for 2013. Looking back over the year I see the triumphs and the failures of reaching my intended goals. However, this is the beauty of having a new year, we get to start all over again.

One of my very first resolutions for each new year is setting out my Bible reading plans. I try to read through the Bible more than once every year, so this takes time, preparation and intentional planning. I use the same plan each time I read through the Bible, but I like to mix it up as the weeks progress. I tried a new plan in the summer and immediately switched back to my trusted reading structure. Needless to say, I like routine.

Today at your fingertips are many opportunities to read through the Scriptures. You can no longer find a reasonable excuse for not navigating through the Bible. Many of us remember the days of B.R.E.A.D. Bible reading plans that you stuck in your Bible, praying that you did not lose it, or praying that no one decided to check up on your little boxes to see if they had been checked with a Bic ink pen. Now, we have smart phones, iPhones, tablets and iPads. You no longer need an accordion folded Bible reading plan, you can simply download Bible apps to your device and start reading. Now, these apps will give you notifications each day of where you need to read. You don’t even have to keep track anymore!

YouVersion is my most used Bible app. I read my Bible from it daily. Within this app are many Bible reading plans. You can read through the entire Bible in 90 days or 365 days. If you want to read the New Testament there are plans for that too.

Distractions abound today. Social media, email, YouTube, television, text messages, and iPods are just a few of the distractions all of us have succumb to in the last five minutes. Multi-tasking has reached it’s zenith in our everyday lives. And, I believe that these modern day conveniences have become our greatest hinderances to our devotional life.

How to Study the Bible pt. 2- Devotional Study

Devotional Study

FOCUS VERSE: John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Devotional Bible study is the most basic form of study. This is where we read through certain passages of Scripture, meditate on those scriptures and learn to apply those same scriptures.

Apply the Bible

The scriptures are what we use to learn more about God. All scripture is profitable for our lives (2 Timothy 3:16). If we understand that all of the Bible is the inspired Word of God, then it’s important we apply the words that are written to our lives.

How to Study the Bible pt. 1

Over the last three weeks I have been teaching the students in my Bible class how to study the Bible. Many avoid Bible study because they don’t know where, or how to begin. I want to share with you for the next several days, or weeks the lessons that I’ve taught. I have taken some principles from Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods, Watchman Nee’s How to Study the Bible and of course my own findings. I hope that the Holy Spirit would ignite a fire within us for more Bible study.
